What Is Dialer Termination? A Guide for Call Centers.

What Is Dialer Termination?
A busy outbound call center can place thousands of calls an hour. Most of them are short, many go unanswered, and every second an agent waits for a connection is time and money lost.
Regular voice routes aren't built for that kind of traffic. That's where dialer termination comes in.
First, what is a dialer?
A dialer is software that places outbound calls automatically, so agents spend more time talking and less time dialing. The most common types are:
Predictive dialers: dial several numbers at once, predicting when agents will be free, and connect answered calls to the next available agent.
Power dialers: automatically dial the next number as soon as an agent finishes a call.
Preview dialers: show the agent the customer's details first, then dial when the agent is ready.
Predictive and power dialers in particular create a very specific traffic pattern: lots of calls, started very quickly, many of them short or unanswered.
What is dialer termination?
Dialer termination is a type of VoIP termination built specifically for high-volume outbound calls from automated dialers.
Like any termination, it delivers your outbound calls to the mobile or landline networks of the people you're calling. The difference is that the routes, capacity and monitoring are designed to handle dialer traffic reliably, without slowing down, rejecting calls or hurting answer rates.

Dialer termination vs. conversational termination
Dialer termination | Conversational termination | |
|---|---|---|
Typical use | Outbound sales, collections, appointment reminders, lead follow-up | Customer support, account management, longer sales calls |
Call volume | Very high | Moderate |
Call length | Many short calls | Longer conversations |
Answer rate | Many calls go unanswered | Most calls are answered |
Key need | High CPS, fast connection, stable routes at scale | Consistent audio quality over long calls |
Many carriers don't allow dialer traffic on their standard routes because the high volume of short and unanswered calls can strain the network. Sending dialer traffic over the wrong routes can lead to rejected calls, blocked numbers or even suspended accounts.
Key features of good dialer termination
1. High CPS (calls per second)
CPS is how many new calls you can start each second. A predictive dialer running a large campaign can need many calls per second. If your provider's CPS limit is too low, calls queue up, agents sit idle and campaigns slow down.
2. Low PDD (post-dial delay)
PDD is the time between dialing and hearing the phone ring. With a predictive dialer, every extra second of delay means more time before an answered call reaches an agent. Low PDD keeps calls flowing quickly.
3. Strong answer rates (ASR)
ASR (Answer-Seizure Ratio) is the percentage of calls that are answered. Good dialer routes deliver your calls cleanly and with proper call authentication, so more people pick up.
4. Stable routes at high volume
Dialer traffic comes in bursts. Routes need to perform consistently at peak times, not just during quiet hours.
5. STIR/SHAKEN call authentication
In the US and Canada, STIR/SHAKEN verifies that calls come from a legitimate caller. Properly authenticated calls are less likely to be labeled "Spam Likely," which protects your answer rates.
6. Real-time monitoring and failover
The best providers monitor route performance around the clock and automatically move traffic to a better route if quality drops, before you notice a problem.
How dialer termination works
The dialer launches calls. Your predictive or power dialer starts many calls at once from your campaign list.
Calls are sent to your termination provider over a SIP connection.
Calls are authenticated under STIR/SHAKEN where it applies.
The provider routes each call over routes built for dialer traffic, balancing quality, capacity and cost.
Calls reach the destination networks, and the phones ring.
Answered calls connect to agents. Unanswered or busy calls are released quickly so the dialer can move on.
Everything is recorded in call detail records (CDRs) for billing and reporting.
Compliance matters
Outbound calling in the US and Canada comes with rules. Depending on your campaigns, these can include:
Do Not Call lists: the National Do Not Call Registry in the US and the National DNCL in Canada
Calling time restrictions based on the recipient's local time
Limits on abandoned calls, which happen when a predictive dialer connects a call but no agent is available
Consent requirements for certain types of automated or prerecorded calls
Accurate caller ID, with no spoofing
A good dialer termination provider supports compliance with tools like STIR/SHAKEN, caller ID validation and fraud monitoring. But your business is still responsible for following the rules for your campaigns. (This is general information, not legal advice.)
Common problems with poor dialer routes
Calls stuck in a queue because CPS limits are too low
Long silences before the phone rings
Low answer rates or calls marked as spam
Calls rejected at busy times
Routes suddenly blocked because the provider didn't allow dialer traffic
How to choose a dialer termination provider
Ask these questions before you sign:
Do you explicitly support dialer traffic?
What CPS can you support for my account, and how fast can it grow?
What is your typical PDD and ASR on dialer routes?
Do you support STIR/SHAKEN?
Do you monitor routes 24/7, with automatic failover?
Do you use direct routes, or resell through other carriers?
Can I test with my real campaign traffic first?
